Cant believe people are so rude as to insult anyone because they dont look the way they expect. And now, with only three years under her belt in the field, From future Starfleets POV, thats 900 years! However, we do know that David Mack does. Mary Wiseman Talks Tilly's Return And Future On 'Star Trek: Discovery' There are characters you really cherish and others that are fun but ultimately nothing special. We need to examine our highest ideals and allegiances to reveal our preconceived notions, shallow knee-jerk reactions, and find the truth about our choices. She could of made it what we call General American/mid-Atlantic to neutralize it a little. And over the last couple of years, so have I. Im still not fond of the gory, violent Klingon business of the first couple of seasons, but I slowly began to see DISCO anew. It was a novelty in his first story and they turned it on its head when he got zapped and made super-smart, but most of the time hes very trying, especially when he gets thrown onto Voyager. One reason why I think people gravitated towards Trip the most on Enterprise was that the combination of writing and performances created one of the most believable humans in Star Trek this side of Dr. McCoy and Chief OBrien. Great interview, Dawn. Thanks for the heads up about Beyer and the Voyager books. While not getting specific about if or where we will see Tilly again, Wiseman also hinted the finale was not the end of her story: Tilly is not somebody who lets people leave her life. She would have flushed out of SFA in her first year. Way too many issues. Its been sooo inconsistent from day one. So sayeth Scotty, the contrarian. As a Black girl, I felt I was supposed to look this way. No one can argue that Shatner is anything less than fit at whatever age. Although they didnt really use secondary characters wellthey still dont. Heaven forefend women feel good about themselves! Mary Wiseman is a good actress but even with that, if Star Trek Discovery was shot in 80s or 90s producers would probably force her to go on a diet or even fire her. I like me. should take a pear of pruning shears and cut off that little pecker of yours (its what Killy would do). They seemed to only be limited by what that particular script called for that week.
Tilly's Discovery Season 4 Exit & Season 5 Future Explained I agree with you on principle as far at this being fine on a fictional Star Trek show. Theres even a scene where she pretty much turns to the camera and says that shell stay till the very end. No one of my Trekkie friends, growing up with TNG watch this anymore. Make it make sense! It feels the only reason was to have a non-binary character, which after a few episodes ended up fading into the background with the rest of the furniture anyway. Come on she looks great. But to play the Devils Advocate here for a moment Tilly as she was originally presented and continued to be for quite some time is not something most women would aspire to be I should think. Season 4 sees Sonequa Martin-Green's, Michael Burnham, return with her. As soon as she was, they should have rewritten Tilly from being a cadet to being a lieutenant or something. Sad but true, yet we always opt to genuflect in the direction of the elephant. This sounds kind of racist. I dont think Tilly is ruined. And I want to take care of me so I can continue to be me. Its a problem in even some least developed countries now. Ive seen fan-fics with better characters than this. Keep up the great work ladies! While Tilly had big dreams in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, she struggled with feelings of inadequacy and was hindered by a social awkwardness that often left her feeling like an outsider. But respect is always earned and never enforceable. KevinB: Oh, I agree with you, in the sense that nothing is perfect and there are flaws and issues here and there. I love Tilly. Her message was not that its okay to be overweight (and shes really not that overweight, nor should it really matter), but simply thats it okay to be her flaws and all. I think criticism of the actors is wrong as well, its not about the actors its what they have been told deliver. But was it not made pretty clear that Counselors had become a regular thing on command crews in the TNG era? Shes loved. I didnt like Reed from Enterprise, does that make me a troll? But my point was that she rarely conveyed anything useful or something that was not already obvious to all. Theres a little Harley Quinn. Shaming is one thing. That way she wont get the appearance she does now of jumping over more experienced officers and seeming to just get ahead because shes Sarus favorite. Mary Wiseman and David Ajala with their co-stars Wilson Cruz, Sonequa Martin-Green, Blu del Barrio, and Anthony Rapp at NYCC 2021, (Trailer also available for international viewers onInstagramandstartrek.com). Mary shouldnt listen to the haters and Sonequa, I never noticed she looked any different than she did before, body wise. And I felt that was ridiculous. Then that very well could be something for not just women but everyone to aspire towards. And its funny that you bring up needing constant therapy as a bad thing when a ton of real life people see a therapist on a regular basis. The very basis of Star Trek is in direct conflict with people like that. Sigh all you like, but thats not going to magically make physics and biology work differently. She is relatable and human and wonderful. David Ajala: What about Grudge in the mirror universe? Though frankly, I find people like her generally seem more aware of their overall health and fitness than people who try to fit others images. Ive never liked Tilly. I could watch Tilly all day! Her character Tilly is not my favorite on the show but body shaming is a shameful act by itself. :-), What, you mean you dont follow your patients around at work, giving suggestions? But I think one of the things that leaves everyone feeling unmoored in this situation is they dont even know how to use their skills to deal with this because its something theyve never seen before, and they cant predict it, they dont know by which rules its operating, and how to even engage. There have been moments where they tried to do that, but like everything else on Discovery where self-doubt and emotional scenes of worry in darkly-lit rooms need to be front and center, they always seemed to bring Tilly back to spazzing out because she was nervous about whether she can do it before being put on a mission. Lwaxana sometimes I dont mind her simply because she puts Picard and Odo on their back feet, but she was very OTT on shows that didnt really have a lot of OTT characters, and there was little reason for her to keep appearing on DS9 beyond reverence towards Majel Barrett. Being encouraged to eat only what ones body needs is another thing entirely. I define me. Definitely not a dig at the actress, she is only delivering what the directors and producers have asked her to deliver. I agree 100%. Janeway is bridge crew, of course she was coming back! I personally have battled weight issues all my life since high school and when I am eating healthy and trainng hard, I feel great and can do almost anything (power skating, fast hockey, tons of physical activity) meanwhile the opposite is true when I let myself go (and that does happen). Maybe having had to step up to the plate before she was ready I think she intellectually knows that she didnt fail, and that its not her fault that Osyraa took the ship, she didnt have all the information, but I still think the fact that that she took command and somehow lost the ship would be an enormous blow to her confidence and make her question a lot of stuff. 1:15. Definitely a character created for the TikTok generation to like.. high five, hugs and ditziness with lots of over emotional feelings on display. The door is open, I suppose, if that show should fail for some reason, but I doubt theyll just throw her back into the same role on the ship like nothing ever happened. I think Mary is doing a fantastic job as isSonequa, Their characters are fantastic as are all the others. That sucks, but that is just the way it goes. Star Trek: Why Tilly & Burnham Are Discovery's Best Friendship Learning? That promise was. But Tilly and the nervous mess Adira has devolved into? Its participation trophy trek. However, the problem with Tilly (and this really is more of a Star Trek Discovery problem because it exists with every character they do this to) is that she never made strides or attempts to improve. Im sorry if the idea of someone not like Discovery upsets you, but its unreasonable to expect people to change their minds for that reason.
